Oh Where Oh Where

February 24th, 2009

So the last month has been hectic needless to say.

January was a long month at work, with lots of late nights, which segued into later January which was long days and late nights as I crammed for my GMAT. I’ve been putting it off long enough…and figured it was time to pull the trigger. Situations will never be “perfect” (financial, time, etc), but sometimes you need to give yourself a firm kick in the ass, suck it up, and just do it. So, now that it’s done, time to apply to schools. On the top of my list is UCI (it’s a good school, and it’s local)…but, here’s the current conundrum that I’m facing with regards to UCI. It’s a fantastic school, but there’s also this.

On January 31, 2009, a conference took place at UC Irvine (UCI) titled, “Whither the Levant? The Crisis of the Nation State: Lebanon, Israel, Palestine.” Organized by the Levantine Cultural Center of Los Angeles and the Middle East Studies Student Initiative, the conference featured two documentaries about the 2006 war in southern Lebanon, three panel discussions, and a number of Middle East studies academics. In spite of the neutral sounding title, the conference was a one-sided exercise in bashing Israel and America.

Joy of joys.

Hmmmmm….

A Jewish pal of mine got me this shirt back in the day…I’ve been looking for an appropriate situation to wear it. I’m thinking pretty much every day. Let’s see how their free speech reacts to my free speech. Intolerance with a touch of violence perhaps? It’s amazing to see what higher education has become. I remember the good ‘ol days where the communist organization would acost me as I tried to keep my head down while navigating past Brotman Hall at Cal State Long Beach on the way to class. Sorry ANSWER, my answer is no. “I’m so angry at the government, man, that sent me here at 0% interest, and my parents man, who hold me down but pay for my dorm. I don’t need a job man, that’s what they want, for me to conform…you know, if everyone smoked weed, there’d be no war.” Ohhh, I can’t wait to get back on campus.

So, next phase, applications done by the end of the week, shortly followed by FAFSA (sigh), then interviews.

You’re lucky, you get to wear your political beliefs on your t-shirt. If I were to wear a shirt that said “More guns, less crime” they’d call the police and expel me.

Who was it that said gun owners were the victims of a decades-long slow-motion hate crime? Eh, who cares. Lets pass some more poll taxes and literacy tests to keep the gun owners down.
