Reading

June 15th, 2007

I’m hopefully going to do some reading as I take the train home this weekend to visit the Parental Units. I could drive, but through LA…on the 405…on a Friday afternoon….HA!

Book I’m currently working on:

The Yiddish Policemen’s Union: A Novel by Michael Chabon.

Books I need to finish: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by David Eggers and Unintended Consequences by John Ross.

It high time I start reading more, and playing music. I have a sweet Gibson SG that I haven’t touched in months, and I think my Telecaster forgot who I am.

Any suggestions on books? I’m going to stick to fiction, so none of this “How Bush Destroyed the World” crap.

My brother just mocked me for using the term “Parental Units”…I think he’s probably right. That was shameful and very….dorky…and if anyone has a handle on dorky, it’s my brother.

For shear fun in the ‘Da Vinci Code’ vain, try J.D Sousa’s ‘The Rise of Empires’

Read the “Da Vinci Code”, never heard of “Rise of Empires” but I’m adding it to the list.

After spending close to 200 hours of my free time over the past few weeks researching and writing an exciting case comment, I asked for, and received, “A Dirty Job” by Christopher Moore for Father’s Day.

Moore is currently one of my favorite authors. His book “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal” is the funniest book I have ever read. Every time I read one of his books, I can’t help but laugh out loud.

Of course, doesn’t Al Gore have a new work of fiction out. . . The Assault on Reason?

I must agree with Mr. Smart Lass. Lamb is a hilarious book of Moore’s, my favorite of his. Another of his,”The Stupidest Angel”, is another great one.

Another Dave Eggers book I’d highly recommend is You Shall Know Our Velocity. Though his newest one “What Is The What” isn’t as funny as his previous efforts, it’s much more solid as its premise is a slightly-fictionalized take on a certain refugee from Darfur. But if you enjoy Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius partly for its humor, You Shall Know Our Velocity maintains that quality of his.

But, “Bush Destroyed the World” IS fiction.

If you like chick fiction… But I doubt that… I am flying to Florida this week. Taking Praise for America by Jon Stewart, and a Gary Larson’s Far Side cartoon book (very funny and good for travel.)

Hey, I have never heard of the music you post on the site? I AM OLD. What kind of music is it? Is there right wing punk? That would be interesting to hear…

Also, who is Terry Goodkind and what type of fiction is it? Okay, I let the isults roll – I LOVE JOHN GRISHAM!! I know.. I know… It’s like people who still collect precious moments. But I get every new book he writes and I love them all..

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer, is a fun book that’ll give you heavy boots.

A lot of the straight-edge, hardcore scene of the early 80’s was rightist. I won’t offer my comments on the music (being a musician and a music fan myself). I think you’ll just have to snag a few tracks and find out for yourself.
