Trying to Embarass Me

July 27th, 2006

Hmmmmm

And how do I defend myself against something like this. Obviously it’s an edited photo…a friend took the time to splice me into some pictures of the comic convention that happened last weekend (which I attended), but there’s little defense I can offer. That geek in the middle is me, but the original picture was taken during my honeymoon in Aruba. My wife didn’t let me go out like that. She insisted first she take a photo, and show it to me…needless to say…I changed.

…and so it Begins

July 27th, 2006

Just spent the last three days updating the look and feel of this site. It’s got a bit more to go, but right now I’m pleased.

Just been sitting back, absorbing the news over the last few days. It seems there’s a lot to talk about. Howard Dean extended the Olive branch, saying we need to stop this divisiveness, and “it’s always someone else’s fault” as far as the President was concerned, and then promptly compared Katherine Harris to Stalin, because, as we all know, Katherine Harris created the Gulags, imprisoned hundred of thousands of people for speaking out against their government, and ultimately was responsible for years of mass murder.

The only thing that bothers me more than communist apologists, is communist apologists who don’t know their history. Stalin, Mao, Guevera…by any rational standards, knowing killers of their own people to gain or keep power by non-democratic means. Viva la revolucion? (I have to word that as carefully as possible to avoid the loop-hole of “George Bush is a killer too”). I don’t know how it was that these people are somehow idolized by the left left (regular left keep your panties on). Somehow, these middle class white kids can go around wearing Che shirts (the best marketing campaign ever…capitalism through selling communist propaganda) while totally ignoring the fact that he helped create the Gulags that imprisoned gays, AIDS victims, minorities, Christians, and others without any sort of trial. This is who people talk about in between readings of Noam Chomsky (anti semite) as if he lifted the political discourse of the last half of the twentieth century.

I once walked into a Barnes and Noble in Long Beach to buy the Anti-Chomsky reader by Horowitz…I’d been forced to read more than enough Chomsky in college during various Political Science and ethics classes (isn’t Chomsky a linguist?) so I figured I’d get the scoop from his critics. This was the exchange:

Me: Do you have the Anti Chomsky reader?

Girl with nose ring: Let me check (silence). It’s not very good you know.

Me: One might say the same about Chomsky…

Girl with nose ring: He’s considered the black sheep of politics you know…he’s ahead of his time.

Me: Have you read the Anti Chomsky reader yet?

Girl with nose ring: No, I just know it’s not very good.

That’s the kind of critic I want to be…where do I get that job!
Anywho, random posts as I gather my thoughts, and update the site more.

If you’ve managed to navigate to here…fantastic. I’m going to be working on this engine now. Regegretfully GoDaddy was wrong when they said my “blog.stoutrepublican.com” site would go unaffected. I’ll let you know.

Just a Reminder

July 26th, 2006

Just to remind the “Bush Lied” and history revisionist crowd that continue to try to have it both ways. The official record doesn’t lie.

Upgrade

July 26th, 2006

Going to be upgrading the web site out of the “blog” program hosted by GoDaddy, and into a real one…I think. I’m going to toy around with it tonight, and see how it works. In the mean time this site should stay up, and all posts, if added, can be transferred.

Sock Puppets and Such

July 25th, 2006

Allah over at Hot Air has the run down of some of the biggest blog scandals, how they happened, and what resulted. For those of us trying to actively take a role in the spinning world of the blogosphere, it’s neat to see that if you have one small bit inspired observation, you can take down Dan Rather. The new “Sock Puppet” scandal of Greenwald also has potential. The hard left leaning editorialist has (allegedly, news to be released later by Patterico) been posting responses in support to his own blogs and posts under different names. People seem to forget that to look someone up on the internet, even based on an anonymous post, isn’t that hard to do, and you should never have to fabricate an individual to seem more supported…

In other news…Ahmadinejad sent letters to Merkel of Germany, and Chirac of France, which (unlike the letter he penned to the US) have yet to be released for review by the general public. The man is a serious nutter…hard to negotiate with someone who is so heavily into the 12th Imam belief. People can scoff at it but:

World leaders had expected a conciliatory proposal to defuse the nuclear crisis after Teheran had restarted another part of its nuclear programme in August.
Instead, they heard the president speak in apocalyptic terms of Iran struggling against an evil West that sought to promote “state terrorism”, impose “the logic of the dark ages” and divide the world into “light and dark countries”.

The speech ended with the messianic appeal to God to “hasten the emergence of your last repository, the Promised One, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace”.

Something to think on…

Random Thoughts and Open Thread

July 25th, 2006

So in general it was a long weekend. The legs are fried because usually my walk consists of home to car, car to cubicle, cubicle to coffee, repeat in reverse. Wandering along the scenic Gas Lamp district was beautiful, since the gentrification of the city, it’s really become a pleasant place to visit, even through the throng of 100,000 at the convention.

Talked politics with some friends, then talked movies, then politics again…good times were had by all (except maybe the neighbors…). My brother picked up the movie “Old Boy” which he won’t stop talking about, and I’m supposed to make an effort to see…classic revenge flick, or so I’ve been told.

I just rearranged the artwork in my house (I’m a huge fan of local Aaron Kraten and have f o u r of his originals), so I could make room for an original Batman (cliché?) panel that I picked up. I’m an obsessive collector of good things old and new. In the mean time, I’m sweating like crazy due to the heat in Southern Cali (should I call Al Gore…does Al Gore even exist anymore?)

Here is what I’ve come to believe:

  1. You can in fact teach an old dog new tricks.
  2. Even an inexpensive first printing of The Great Gatsby is too expensive for me to buy.
  3. Women are not like fine wines…they’re more like a good beer. They have a born on date, and if you don’t appreciate them early enough, they just become bitter.
  4. Batman original pages cost more when you can see the Bat emblem on the hero’s chest…this took me an hour lecture from someone who looked kinda like this:

Great Israel news posted on Hugh Hewitt…read it to get up to date with Israel. There was a rally in LA here…both sides of the alley showing their support for Israel, and against the terrorists. That’s what I like to see people..This is an open thread, so post whatever your heart desires.

Douche of the Week

July 24th, 2006

Back in the Swing of Things

John Kerry is taking shots again…we all know that “he had a plan” which he never unveiled during the 2004 election, now he states about the Israel conflict, “If I was president, this wouldn’t have happened. ” Okay Mr. Kerry…how?

“This is about American security and Bush has
failed. He has made it so much worse because of his lack of reality in
going into Iraq.…We have to destroy Hezbollah,” he said.

I want to make sure I have this right. We shouldn’t be in Iraq, because they posed no threat to us, because they have (had) no weapons of mass destruction…but, we can destroy Hezbollah, who poses no direct threat to us, and has no weapons of mass destruction. Somebody help me out here. I know that Kerry is the master of nuances…but I miss the point where Saddam attacking and killing neighbors, means we go to the UN…Hezbollah attacking and destroying neighbors, the US needs to “destroy”. Any liberals out there who can clarify Kerry’s stance without offering you own (as y’all make me do with Bush)…he might be your candidate in ‘08.

So therefore…

Nerding it Up Old School Style

July 21st, 2006

Oh yes…this weekend is going to be spent at the San Diego comic convention.

In about 5 hours we will be driving south along the 405, fighting some sort of traffic, while discussing the importance of various writers, illustrators, and of course why we as fans are the true leaders of the industry, “without us…yadda…yadda.” The obligatory “Superman, Spiderman, or Batman” is a better hero conversation will carry on for an uncomfortable long period of time (I rest my laurels strictly on Batman, hero by choice, not by super power blessing) before arriving at my brother’s house in San Diego. We will then probably throw back several beers (several), and at this point the conversation will no doubt edge towards graphic novels, real novels, Clowes, Jimmy Corrigan, Neil Gaiman, and David Eggers.

Then, ideally intoxicated at this point, we will begin the long haul to downtown San Diego to bounce from bar to bar to see if we can find any familiar (famous to us) faces, whereupon we will promptly buy them drinks, and kiss their asses. In between arguments about whether or not we are truly seeing a new revolution of the industry (comics are one of the few true American artforms) with the likes of Frank Miller delving back into Batman, more beers will be consumed, and “I’m so happy I could be here,” will ensue between handshakes, and uncomfortable (3 pats on the back) hugs.

Sleep.

As a fan of ABC’s “Lost” I will obviously be attending that panel, salivating like some sort of head case, hoping to pick up on some hint of what the next season may present. Then it’s off to lunch, where will be having more beer (Guinness…woot!), and mocking those who felt it necessary to dress up as Star Trek characters, or any characters for that matter.

Next, Kevin Smith, ’nuff said.

I will probably then call the wife who will mock me for the fact I just spend $75 getting the signed Batman comics that Sam Keith helped pen. I do what I want!! Saturday night, more mellow…I’m thinking I’ll be drinking some Gentleman Jack, trying not to think about beer, and retelling stories to people who were present as said stories occurred, yet explaining it as if they weren’t.

I can’t wait.
